In most cases, the username, password, and IP address given below should help you log in. However, you’d also come across issues once in a while.
WARNING:
The default IP address, which is a common name for the gateway IP address, may change depending on the network configuration. It may have to deal with how IP addresses are assigned on the network. Therefore, if the given IP address doesn’t work, you may need to talk to the network admin.
Change Your NETGEAR Default Password
If you were able to log in using the default username and password we have given above, the first thing you should do is change your NETGEAR default password.
As you can see, the default username and password that come with Netgear routers are not really secure. Of course, you cannot change the default username, but you can change the password. This way, even if someone manages to access your Wi-Fi network, they won’t be able to make system-level changes.

Fortunately, it is easy to change the login password for your NETGEAR router. Given below are the steps you can follow to make this work. Please note that the exact steps will vary based on the model.
- Make sure your computer is connected to the network you are trying to change the admin password for. We recommend using Ethernet because it will make it easier for you to log in and log out without interrupting the connection.
- Then open a web browser and enter www.routerlogin.net. Alternatively, you can enter the IP address by model number or make.
- In a few seconds, you should be able to see the login interface where you can enter your username and password. You can check the password in the table above.
- Once you have logged in, you should be able to see the basic home page or the dashboard.
- After this, you navigate to Advanced > Administration > Set Password.
- The router will now ask you to enter the current admin password. After this, you can enter the new password. Ensure that you select a complex, difficult-to-guess password.
Pro Tip:
Some Netgear routers also allow you to set up a password recovery system. This system allows you to recover your password and log in if you forget it. You may set up this option. If you don’t set this up or forget the password, you will have to factory reset the router to regain access to the admin panel.
- The router will now ask you to confirm your action and may log you out.
- You can log back in using the new password you have set.
That’s it. You have successfully changed the password for the NETGEAR router. You can now use these login credentials to access the dashboard. Note that you can use similar methods to access the router’s mobile apps.
What if the NETGEAR Default Password Doesn’t Work
There are times when, despite your best efforts and accuracy, the NETGEAR router’s default passwords don’t work. Here are some possible reasons and solutions:
There are two common reasons why the Netgear default password doesn’t work for the router:
- You are not entering the correct password
- Someone has changed the login password in the past
Therefore, you should first double-check whether you are entering the correct password. If possible, check the product packaging or the label on the side of the NETGEAR equipment. Both these places mention the username and password for the device. However, if entering the password from the label does not solve the problem, you can confirm that someone has changed the password.
If someone has changed the password, the only solution here is to perform a factory reset on your Netgear router. When you perform a factory reset, all the default settings will be restored, including the default login credentials.
Even if you don’t have access to the dashboard, the easiest way to factory reset your router is to locate the reset key on it. This is mostly on the back of the router, and it could be either a button or a compressed button. If the button is compressed, you may need a safety pin or a SIM ejector to use it. You will have to press and hold this button for at least 15 seconds, and the factory reset process will begin.
Pro Tip:
Make sure your computer is connected to the router via Ethernet cable, rather than entering the default Wi-Fi password or connecting to the default Wi-Fi network. This way, you can easily change the network name and configure the network.
Once the reset is complete, you can log in using the default credentials. Keep in mind that the factory reset process will clear all your configurations, including Wi-Fi network names, connected device history, and other settings you may have changed.
What if the NETGEAR Default IP Address Doesn’t Work
Sometimes, though, you may have trouble accessing the NETGEAR default IP address. It means you cannot open the dashboard login interface at all. Don’t worry; there are some solutions:
- If you have already performed a factory reset, the default IP address should work. That is, if anyone had changed the gateway IP address, a factory reset would undo the process.
- You should also try some of the domains NETGEAR uses instead of the IP address. You can try options like routerlogin.com and routerlogin.net. These domains should work whether or not you have Internet access through the router.
- You should also double-check the router’s IP address using the user guide and the label.
As we mentioned earlier, network-wide configurations can also change the gateway access. In some cases, office networks may prevent you from accessing the gateway IP address. Therefore, you should also see how the network is configured and whether these settings are affecting your access to this IP address.
Wrapping Up
I hope this list of passwords and IP addresses helped you log in to your NETGEAR router and access settings. The process is straightforward and doesn’t take more than a few seconds. Don’t hesitate to try a few combos from related models, though.
