It can really get on your nerves when the Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting, right? Unfortunately, this is a frequent issue with Xfinity Wi-Fi router-modem combo devices. While it can be frustrating, there are a few pro tips to help you fix the issue and restore a stable Wi-Fi experience. Although I have optimized this guide for Xfinity Wi-Fi routers, some general tips may work with other ISPs.

Why Does Xfinity Wi-Fi Keep Disconnecting?

Let’s look at the common reasons why your Xfinity Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting while you’re using it. Based on the frequency and intensity of the issue, one or more factors could be contributing to the disconnection.

  • A temporary glitch with the Xfinity Wi-Fi router is the most common reason for frequent Wi-Fi issues, such as disconnection.
  • Network outage caused by Xfinity may also prevent the Xfinity router from accessing the Internet, forcing your device to disconnect from the network.
  • Connectivity issues with the Xfinity router modem could be another reason for frequent issues. You may find issues with loose or faulty cables, for instance.
  • Your Xfinity router may disconnect some devices if the Wi-Fi router is overloaded. So, if way too many devices are connected to the Xfinity network, you need not look for another reason.
  • Suboptimal placement of the Xfinity router may create Wi-Fi dead zones or poor connectivity zones in your home, and they can cause frequent disconnections.
  • If your Xfinity router or modem is outdated or is running an outdated firmware version, it could also lead to connectivity issues.
  • Sometimes the issue has to do with a specific device of yours, such as your smartphone or computer. Some settings on this device may be causing the Wi-Fi to disconnect.
  • You may also be dealing with signal interference if you keep the Xfinity Wi-Fi router close to other equipment, such as a microwave oven.
  • Finally, you could be dealing with a faulty/disabled Wi-Fi router/modem from Xfinity. The issues with the modem can surely cause frequent connection issues.

As you can see, we are covering a lot of ground when it comes to fixing the frequent disconnection issue of the Xfinity Wi-Fi router. As I said, there could be a combination of these issues, such as signal interference and suboptimal placement of the Xfinity router. Keeping this in mind, we have to take a systemic approach to fix the problem, and it starts by avoiding the most common issues and making sure that specific problems are fixed along the way.

How to fix Xfinity Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting

Here are some tested pro tips to fix the Xfinity Wi-Fi router disconnection issue. I recommend you try these steps in the same order. This way, you won’t have to modify network settings unless you really have to.

#1 Restart the Xfinity Router

Similar to how we deal with most of the issues that you come across with Xfinity routers or any other routers, the first tactic that you have to use is to restart the router.

I recommend using the Power button to restart the Xfinity router.

#2 Check for Loose/Faulty Connections

Another common reason for frequent disconnection with the Xfinity Wi-Fi router could be loose or faulty connections. So, you should check whether all the cables, such as the power and Ethernet cables and the coaxial/fiber cable, are correctly connected to the Wi-Fi modem router device.

Check For Loose Faulty Connections

I recommend unplugging these cables and plugging them back in to be on the safe side. When you combine it with a thorough restart of the Xfinity router, the disconnection problem will go away as well.

#3 Check for Xfinity Outage/Maintenance

If you are coming across a disconnection issue for the first time, it could also be due to an ongoing outage or maintenance. So, you should use the Xfinity app or the website to check whether there is an active outage going on.

In case of scheduled maintenance, you would have received a notification from Xfinity, and you can count on that to know when the service will be back.

If there is indeed an active outage, there is no point in making changes to the system until the service is back online. And when the service is back online, the disconnection issue should also be resolved. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi disconnections are common after natural disasters like floods and tornadoes.

#4 Remove Potential Interference

If you are facing the disconnection issue while using the 2.4GHz network of the Xfinity router, it could be a result of signal interference. It might happen if you have placed devices like a microwave oven close to the router.

So, the solution here is to remove the Set option and make sure that there is a proper line of sight between your device and the Xfinity router. I also recommend using the 5GHz network whenever possible (unless, of course, there is a compatibility issue.)

Remove Potential Interference

#5 Remove Potential Overloading

You should also check whether your Xfinity Wi-Fi router is overloaded, which means too many devices are connected to it. You should keep in mind that a dual-band router like the one from Xfinity is designed to handle tens of devices at a time. But when the number increases, the router modem may have trouble managing all these devices, causing some of the devices to disconnect from the network.

So, when stability of the connection is essential, you will have to cut down the number or upgrade to a mesh Wi-Fi system that can handle a higher number of connected devices.

#6 Update Xfinity Router Firmware

I have also come across scenarios where firmware issues with the Xfinity router cause disconnections on specific devices, like iPhone and Android smartphones. So, it is a good idea to make sure that your Xfinity router is running the latest version of firmware.

Update Xfinity Router Firmware

Updating the firmware is easy. You first have to log into the admin page of the Xfinity router. Then navigate to a section where options like Router Upgrade or Firmware Upgrade will be available. Then you can follow the on-screen directions to complete the upgrading process.

Keep in mind that the firmware upgrade process would take up to 15 minutes. You have to keep the Xfinity router powered on throughout the process.

#7 Optimize Location & Ventilation of Router

The next great step towards fixing the Xfinity Wi-Fi disconnection problem is making sure that you have kept the router in a well-ventilated yet accessible place. So, like any other electronic equipment, your router also needs proper airflow to function correctly.

Optimize Location Ventilation Of Router

However, the most important thing is to ensure that the router can provide a sufficient signal to all your devices. So, if you are keeping the device far away from the router, there will definitely be signal drops, causing disconnections.

So, make sure that you have kept the router at a location that is accessible equally from all the devices that you usually use. Then, again, if the default router does not do the job, you should consider upgrading to a mesh Wi-Fi system.

#8 Reconfigure the Wi-Fi Network

If the disconnection problem doesn’t go away, you may want to reconfigure the Wi-Fi network. This basically involves deleting the existing configuration and setting up the Xfinity WiFi from scratch. Doing so will make sure that you have new network credentials. It will also force your smartphone or computer to do a thorough reconnection.

You should see if the Xfinity app for Android or iOS offers an option for such a reconfiguration.

#9 Power Cycle and Reset the Xfinity Router

If you still haven’t had luck getting rid of this issue, you are left with only a few options. One of them is power cycling and resetting the Xfinity Wi-Fi router.

Now, there are a few ways to go about it, but let me explain how to do power cycling first.

  1. To do power cycling, you first have to remove all the cables from the Xfinity router. The power cable must be removed at last.
  2. Now you have to wait for up to 10 minutes while the device is not connected to power or any other source of signal.
  3. After 10 minutes, you can connect all these cables one by one, thus forcing the router to go through a complete cycle of power.

This process can remove a variety of issues because it forces all the modules of the Wi-Fi router to restart.

However, if power-cycling the Xfinity router does not solve the problem, you can try a factory reset. Here is how you can go about it.

  1. Make sure that all cables except for the Power cable are disconnected from the router.
  2. Now, locate the Reset button on the back of the router
  3. Use a safety pin to press and hold the button for a few seconds until the status light starts flashing
  4. You now need to wait for the router to complete the factory reset process.

On most models, the factory reset process will take about 15 minutes. Ensure that there is stable power at this time.

#10 Contact Xfinity and Consider Upgrades

The last step of solving this problem is contacting Xfinity and getting a replacement router. It is also clear by this point that the router that you have is either faulty or has some hardware-level issues. So, it makes more sense to get a replacement or, better yet, to get an upgrade to a mesh Wi-Fi system.

Wrapping Up

Although there are some generic solutions, most of the steps I have detailed here have either helped me solve an Xfinity Wi-Fi disconnection issue in my place or at my friends’. So, you can try these pro tips, and they are likely to help you ensure that there is a stable WiFi experience from Xfinity. But then again, faulty devices are not uncommon from Xfinity, so you should always be ready for a potential replacement or upgrade.
