There’s no denying that Safari is an impressive, reliable browser for Mac. However, sometimes, you’d need to shift to something more suitable for your work or specific purposes. Google Chrome, as it stands, is one of the best options we can consider. However, what to do with your browsing data? There are a few ways to transfer data from Safari to Google Chrome in just a few seconds. We have covered that here.
Transferring Safari Bookmarks to Google Chrome
The first step is transferring Safari bookmarks to Google Chrome. Doing this will help you access frequently visited websites quickly. If you are like me, the Bookmarks folder is filled with to-read articles and more. So, missing them is not a viable option. Anyway, you can use the following steps to transfer Safari bookmarks in a few seconds.
Fortunately, Safari provides a simplified method for exporting bookmarks. The steps are as follows:
- Open Safari on your Mac
- Go to File > Export Browsing Data to File

- Use the upcoming interface to select Bookmarks.

- Click the Export button to proceed with the process.

- In the next step, select where you want to save the export file.
- Enter the password or Touch ID to authorize the action.
Now, you have successfully saved a ZIP file that contains all the bookmarks you had added to Safari. Now, we need to import these bookmarks to Google Chrome.
- Open Google Chrome
- Navigate to the three-dot menu > Bookmarks and Lists > Import Bookmarks and Settings.

- On the next page, select the option to import bookmarks from an HTML file.
- Now, browse and find the HTML file (within the ZIP file) you exported from Safari.
- Click Okay, and Chrome will import all the bookmarks from the file.
These bookmarks will appear inside a folder on the Bookmarks Bar. Alternatively, you can go to the three-dot menu > Bookmarks and Lists > Bookmarks Manager to change where and how they show up.
Transferring Passwords from Safari to Google Chrome
The next step is transferring the passwords you have saved in Safari to Google Chrome. As you know, Safari and Chrome both have a built-in password management tool.
Safari’s password manager is further integrated with the Passwords app for macOS. Anyway, you can follow the steps below to smoothly transfer passwords from Safari to Chrome:
- Open Safari and go to File > Export Browsing Data to File.
- On the next page, select the Passwords option and click Export.

- Now, select the location where you want to save the file containing passwords.
- Click Save, and you can find a ZIP file. Inside the ZIP file, you can find a CSV file.
- Open Google Chrome and go to the three-dot menu > Passwords and Autofill > Google Password Manager.

- From the sidebar, choose Settings.

- Under the “Import passwords” section, click the “Select File” button to proceed.

- Now, select the CSV file you had exported from Safari.
Google Chrome will now import all passwords from Safari into Google Password Manager. Because Google Password Manager works across Google services, you can access and auto-fill passwords from many devices, such as your Android smartphone and tablet.
As it stands, you can use two of these methods to transfer content from Safari to Chrome. Chrome does not allow you to import browsing history, making that option not viable even if we manage to export the history from Safari.
However, if you are moving to Chrome from Firefox, you can use the Content Import functionality to bring your browsing history from Firefox to Chrome. This function does not allow us to select Safari as the source.
A Word on Third-party Solutions
Unfortunately, we were unable to find any reliable third-party tools that help you transfer your history from Safari to Google Chrome. The ones available are either too complex or don’t work most of the time. Additionally, I am sure you don’t want a random app accessing your browser history.
However, there are other Chromium-based browsers that allow you to import data from Safari. Many such apps allow you to import browsing history along with bookmarks, passwords, and auto-fill information. In most cases, these browsers, including Arc or Opera, offer valuable features and keep you away from Google’s tracking and other restrictions.
I recommend trying those before switching to Google Chrome.
Wrapping Up
We hope this guide taught you the easiest way to transfer data from Safari to Google Chrome. As long as you use an admin-level account, the entire process takes only a few seconds. Although you are limited to transferring passwords and bookmarks, both options work without requiring external utilities.
