    Like phone calls, mobile data is also dependent on the signal that your device can receive from the nearby base station or server.

    • For instance, network congestion is a common reason. This is what happens when too many devices in an area are connected to a single tower and consume a significant amount of resources. As a result, the tower will have to balance its resources, and you will notice significantly reduced speeds.
    • Additionally, your cellular provider may throttle the maximum speed during specific times or under certain conditions.
    • Physical obstructions can also affect the speeds you get from a mobile data connection, especially if you rely on a 5G connection. For instance, if you are in an elevator or a basement, the device may not receive sufficient signals.
    • Sometimes, band-related changes can also cause low speeds.

    Even when you are in a location with enough coverage, hardware issues with your phone can cause slower speeds. Here are a few cases:

    • It’s possible that the 4G/5G modem on your smartphone is overworked/overheated. This may occur when you are engaged in resource-intensive tasks, such as gaming.
    • The amount of RAM available on your device can also impact the mobile data speeds you get. RAM is essential for processing mobile data requests.
    • On legacy devices, SIM card-related issues can also contribute to sluggish performance.

    Even when you have sufficient signal and functional hardware, the software configuration must be right. If that isn’t the case, mobile data speeds will take a hit.

    • Applications or processes on your smartphone could be hogging mobile data bandwidth, especially if they are running in the background.
    • You may be using a VPN that is connected to a server located far away. In this case, the actual speeds you get on your device will vary.

    As you can see, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for this problem. Therefore, you should take several steps to improve the situation.

    Here are some tested and proven ways to improve your mobile network’s speed.

    Some of these steps address the upload/download speeds you get from a mobile Internet connection. Some, however, focus on how quickly the device loads a page or service.

    #1 Check the Signal/Network Status

    The first step is to check whether you have an active network connection. You should also ensure that the selected data SIM has a sufficient number of signal bars. If you are in an area with a poor signal, experiencing slow browsing/download speeds is unsurprising.

    You may also want to check with your ISP/cellular carrier to see if the area has sufficient coverage. Since ISPs and carriers take time to deploy technologies like 4G LTE and 5G, the device may shift between slow and fast networks.

    #2 Check Your Mobile Data Plan for Caps

    If you are in an area with sufficient network coverage, your mobile data plan could be the next culprit. Data plans almost always have Fair Usage Policy caps. That is, once you exceed a set limit, the cellular carrier will reduce your speeds.

    Therefore, you must first check whether you have an active mobile data plan. Second, you must confirm that you have not gone past the FUP limit. If so, the mobile Internet speeds will definitely be slower. Depending on the carrier, you may have the option to reset the FUP limits monthly.

    #3 Try Some Quick Fixes

    Before we delve into full-blown solutions, try some quick fixes. Here are two:

    1. Turn on Airplane Mode on your smartphone by going to the Settings menu. Once turned on, keep your device idle for around 30 seconds. After this period, you can turn off Airplane Mode. These steps will force the smartphone to reconnect to mobile data, solving many temporary issues.
    2. Smartphones also need reboots at times. If you think you’ve been using the phone for a few weeks, consider restarting the device. This step will reset multiple components on your device and force a data re-connection.

    As I mentioned earlier, hardware components play a crucial role in determining data speeds. Obviously, you cannot inspect the hardware antenna or most components. However, you can ensure that you do not block the important parts of your smartphone.

    • Ensure that your protective case is not blocking the external antenna on the device, if any. This might happen when you are using thick, bulky cases.
    • If your smartphone has a physical SIM card, you should check its condition. Check whether the SIM card’s connection pins are aligned with the SIM port/tray.

    #5 Optimize Data Usage Settings

    The data usage settings you have set on your smartphone may also limit the speed you actually get while browsing. Check if you have enabled data saver mode on your Android or iPhone. And if you have, you should check and turn it on to get the maximum speed possible from the connection. Here is how you can do it.

    • On Android, navigate to Settings > Network > Data Saver. Ensure that Data Saver is turned off.

    This setting ensures that your phone can utilize the maximum bandwidth your mobile data connection can offer.

You must also check whether you have enabled cloud backups or app updates via mobile data. Turning these options will help you save bandwidth.

    Sometimes, your mobile web browser could be the reason for slow speeds. It may happen due to two significant reasons: cache and ads. Here’s how you can tackle both:

    • First, you should clear the temporary files from your phone’s browser, especially the cache. You can do this by going to Settings > Privacy section of your web browser.
    • Another option is to switch to a web browser with built-in ad-blocking capabilities. You can consider options like Brave, Opera, or Firefox Focus. All these browsers will block background trackers and ad requests, thus improving the loading time.

    I recommend following these steps if you find that page loading speeds are worse than usual.

    #7 Control/Optimize VPN Usage

    Depending on the condition, you may have to enable or disable VPN usage. Here’s a rundown:

    • If you suspect that your carrier is throttling your connection, try using a VPN. I have encountered a situation where a VPN connection helps me browse/stream faster. However, the VPN server location also matters.
    • However, at times, a VPN connection can also slow down the connection. This is most likely to happen when you connect your smartphone to a VPN server located far away. In these cases, try a speed test after disabling the VPN. Alternatively, you can try a nearby VPN server location.

    In other words, simply connecting to a random VPN server location does not provide significant help. Instead, choose a server based on your specific requirements.

    #8 Try Private DNS

    A DNS server is responsible for converting your requests into the corresponding IP address. However, your ISP/cellular carrier’s DNS servers may often be overcrowded or unreliable. It will result in poor loading speeds, even for standard pages. The solution? Private DNS.

    You can use a Private DNS provider to set up a separate DNS server. This server will process your request at a speed better than normal. You can do this by installing dedicated applications or going to Network Settings on your phone.

    #9 Band Unlocking and Optimization

    Your smartphone should connect to the correct band to utilize the maximum performance. You can ensure this happens in two ways:

    At the basic level, you can navigate to Settings > Network > Mobile Data Settings, where you can choose the Preferred network. Make sure you have selected the 4G/5G option instead of 5G only. This setting ensures that your device will fall back on the 4G network when 5G signals are poor.

    However, if you feel that your phone never connects to a 5G network, you should choose the 5G only option. Please note that this setting may reduce your battery life.

    You should also check if your device lets you access the hidden menu for band unlocking. This menu, when available, allows you to choose how your phone connects to the tower.

    If none of the options below have helped you, you are better off resetting your network settings. This option will restore factory settings and force a thorough reconnection to the server. Here’s how you can go about it:

    • On Android, go to Settings > System > Reset options, and choose an option titled Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile, and Bluetooth settings.

    Please note that you will lose all settings, including saved credentials or Bluetooth connections.
