Kiwi Browser for Android Is Officially Archived and Won’t Be Maintained, Says Developer

Kiwi Browser has had a niche following among Android users thanks to its versatility and simplicity. But in what comes as a disappointment to many, the developer behind Kiwi Browser has decided to archive the project, adding that it won’t be maintained after January 2025.

Kiwi Browser is an open-source browser that offers a simple yet versatile browsing experience on Android. In particular, it allowed extension support, allowing users to download and install extensions via the Chrome Web Store. The browser had become so popular because enthusiasts could use their favorite extensions on their smartphones as well.

However, these good times have found their gradual end, as the developer reveals.

This means Kiwi Browser will not be receiving any future updates, but those interested can continue using the latest published version, which is available through the official GitHub page. During active development, Kiwi Browser was available through the Google Play Store, but the developer has pulled it from the store.

This means that GitHub is the only place from which people can download Kiwi Browser. However, if you have already installed Kiwi Browser on your Android smartphone, it will stay on your device. But, as one can guess, the application will not receive any official updates from the developer.

Arnaud Granal built Kiwi Browser for Android, and he has maintained the browser for over a total of 7 years, during which it has received many impressive updates. Responding to questions about the shutdown, Granal said that the project was becoming challenging to manage, primarily due to the increasing user base, which expects regular updates.

Nevertheless, all hope is not lost.

The developer added that the extension capabilities of Kiwi Browser have been integrated into Microsoft Edge Canary, which is a beta version of Microsoft’s browser. Users can install Edge Canary on their Android smartphone and enjoy the extension compatibility that Kiwi Browser used to offer. However, the process of installing and maintaining the extensions will not be that seamless.

For one, after installing Microsoft Edge Canary, users have to enable the option manually. They can do it by going to Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Once they turn on the option named “Extension install by ID,” users can install the desired extension by entering its ID. It means there is no option to download extensions from the Chrome Web Store or the official website.

Those who want to enjoy the features of Kiwi Browsers can find the necessary info on its GitHub page. If you are looking for other Android browsers that offer extension support, you can count on Firefox and Samsung Internet.
