Despite its caveats, Google Chrome is one of the most reliable and feature-rich web browsers available. Like popular options, Chrome also allows you to utilize the full potential of your computer’s screen, thanks to its full-screen mode. Given how versatile web browsers have become, you would want to use the Full Screen mode on your Google Chrome browser on different devices. In this guide, you will find complete guides.
What is Full Screen Mode in Google Chrome?
Google Chrome’s full-screen mode utilizes the entire screen to display the web page. Depending on the page, you may have the option to hide the toolbar, bookmarks bar, and other elements.

The full-screen mode essentially creates a scenario where you can focus the most on the web page content instead of being distracted by all the other elements of the web browser UI. On PC and Mac, the full-screen mode will hide the taskbar and the dock, respectively.
It is an option I regularly use when I want to focus on the web browser. Fortunately, Google Chrome’s full-screen display option works well for various needs.
Benefits of Using Full-Screen Mode
Here is an overview of the benefits you get from using full-screen mode.
Distraction-free Browsing
The full-screen mode basically hides all other elements of the browser UI. It means you can use the entire Google Chrome window for the web page itself. When you are browsing things like a long article, a movie, or a YouTube video, this extra space can help you focus on the content without distractions.
This distraction-free browsing is likely one of the significant benefits of full-screen mode. It is also great when you want more than one person to view the screen, ensuring everything remains crisp.
Accessibility
For those with accessibility needs, full-screen mode on Google Translate is often necessary rather than optional. If you have trouble viewing content on a web page, switching to full-screen mode can improve visibility.
Privacy
You may want some additional privacy while browsing the web and might not want others to see your bookmarks bar or other tabs. Turning on full-screen mode helps you with this.
Reduced Eye Strain
Some users also rely on Google Chrome’s full-screen mode to reduce eye strain. Even with a super-sharp display, looking at a small window can make things difficult. The full-screen mode solves the problem.
Cleaner Layouts
The full-screen mode also presents a cleaner layout for viewing things. This is an additional advantage when you want a smooth workspace.
How to Use Full-Screen Mode on Different Devices
Now, I will show you how to use Google Chrome’s full-screen mode on different devices, starting with a Windows PC.
Windows
You can find two layers of full-screen viewing on Chrome for Windows. First, you can maximize the window using the Maximize button. However, this option will still show the window bar and buttons. To remove these elements, use the Full Screen feature. You can do this using two methods:
If you prefer using a keyboard shortcut, press the F11 key to enable full-screen mode. Your Google Chrome window will soon hide unnecessary elements, allowing you to focus on the webpage content.
If you prefer using the mouse, however, you can access the three-dot menu and click the Full Screen button located next to the Zoom In/Zoom Out interface. This action will enable full-screen mode on the device.
You can use the Esc key to exit full-screen mode.
macOS
On macOS, the default maximizing option offers a focused full-screen experience. That is, when you click the Green button next to the window, the Google Chrome window will take up the entire display space. Based on your settings, the screen may hide both the menu bar and the dock. However, if you want to go a step further, you can use the following methods.

As I said, macOS will open Google Chrome in full-screen mode when you click the green button. Alternatively, you can access the Full Screen button by going to the three-dot menu.

One major limitation here is that the toolbar and bookmarks bar will stay visible. You can solve this problem using two steps.

- Go to the View menu and uncheck the “Always Show Toolbar in Full Screen” option.
- You can also uncheck the option named Always Show Bookmarks Bar
These settings ensure that the toolbar/bookmarks bar stays hidden when you turn on Full Screen.
Android
Chrome for Android does not have a full-screen mode that can be enabled. However, you can use a number of methods to achieve a similar effect.
- You can open a particular website in full-screen mode by adding it as a home screen shortcut. You’d be able to do it by going to the three-dot menu and tapping on “Add to Home Screen.” Depending on the website, it may prompt you to install the app. Once this is done, you can open that website in full-screen mode. The Google Chrome address would not be visible when you do this.
- You can use the Full Screen button on the video player to enable full screen. This option should work on sites like YouTube and others.
- Some third-party apps may let you turn your Google Chrome app window into full screen. However, they are not always the most compatible option.
iOS
Unfortunately, iOS does not support enabling full-screen mode for Google Chrome. The only exception is when you can enable full-screen mode while watching videos on Chrome.
Wrapping Up
I hope this guide helped you understand how full-screen mode works on Google Chrome. You can use this feature to improve your focus or enhance the workflow. Except in the case of iOS, you have plenty of options to use the full-screen feature on most devices as well.
